productivity

When you’re juggling multiple passions time management is key but let’s be honest, its easy to let distractions get the best of us. Here are a few techy tools to help you stay focused.

Self Control
This free application for the Mac OS X lets you block access to websites that you specify and your mail servers. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your ‘blacklist’ and click “Start.” But don’t think about cheating though, because once the app has started you won’t have access to any of the sites on your blocked list, even if you restart your computer! Try it, its a great way to stay focused. If you’re a PC user check out the Stop Distractions app

Kill News Feed
Facebook is a great tool but it can be a productivity killer. The biggest culprit? Aimlessly scrolling through your news feed. Kill News Feed is Chrome Browser Extension that complete blocks your Facebook News feed and replaces it with a message reminding you not to get distracted. You can still check your messages and notifications, post status updates, and do everything you could do before but you just won’t get distracting news feed posts anymore.

Freedom
If you’re using apps like Self Control and Kill Newsfeed and still find yourself getting distracted by the internet, the Freedom App might be just what you need. Freedom works by disabling your internet connection for the time period you specify up to 8 hours! When the Freedom app is running, you’re not able to get online unless your reboot your computer.

SaneBox
If you’re drowning in email, SaneBox keeps your inbox clean by moving unimportant email into a new folder called SaneLater. If you’re worried about losing your emails don’t worry because you can check the SaneLater folder at any time. Sanebox also sends you a daily digest summarizing all notes that were sent to SaneLater folder throughout the day and much time you saved from avoiding unimportant emails. Best of all you can try it before you buy with their 14 day trial.

Rescue Time
RescueTime is an app that runs in the background of your computer or mobile devices to track your daily habits and identify the time leaks that affect your productivity. When activated it tracks the amount of time spent on applications and websites and sends a detailed weekly report of where you spent your time. It also includes the ability to set alerts to let you know when you spent a certain amount of time on an activity, track what you accomplished during the day and you can block websites that you specify.
